Flint REP presents GODSPELL

Ava LaFayette

GODSPELL is a musical that has been beloved for years and gets a fresh look in this telling of the teachings of Jesus in, you’ll never believe this, a pool at the flint repertory theater.

The “stage” is a pool in the center of the room and is covered by a thin cloth as everyone takes their seats.

Music plays softly in the background as you wait for the show to start, a fair warning the seats are close together in each section of the room so there is little space between you and the person next to you, but all in good fun and good times but be careful. If you sit in the front row, you risk the chance of getting wet from the actors in the pool!

Now the costumes for this show are a little different than you might normally see, since you wouldn’t want to perform in a pool with regular clothes on, therefore every actor is wearing a swimsuit to move freely around the pool and to be able to perform their best.

Starting the show with a large musical number was amazing, and I don’t say this lightly when I say this was truly the most talented group of singers and performers, I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. The way their voices mix with harmonies in each and every song, and each individual person is an amazingly strong and beautiful singer.

Now performing in a pool isn’t without its downsides since you can’t have the actors wear microphones due to the water, and during some solo numbers or parts the music is just loud enough that you can’t quite hear the singer.

Speaking of talented singers, I would like to highlight a few for you in this show. Kyle Patrick portrays Jesus and what a part he plays! A talented singer and an amazing actor as well, his performance as Jesus will not be one you soon forget, especially a little surprise from him during the crucifixion. You don’t want to miss Patrick’s incredible performance.

Next Shayna Blass carries the female vocals, background or otherwise, and nails her solo song. Blass kills the harmonies in different songs, where she is not the focal point, but you still know that she is singing her heart out.

Now if you’re interested in humor and stage reactions your eyes will always be drawn to Jason Briggs, who is not only the funniest cast member but also extremely vocally gifted like the rest of the cast.

You will hear Briggs carry the vocal harmonies in the background and will be laughing at his – just after intermission bit!

Additionally – there were outstanding performances from the rest of the cast; Chanelle Beach, James Cech, Gia Mae Chessa, Sabrina Dahlgren, Travis Darghali, Bryana Hall, and Enrique Miguel (Who gave a stunning and moving performance as John the Baptist and Judas).

Just a few more comments about the musical… there are flashing lights during one of the scenes. If you are prone to seizures, then this could be a possible trigger.

There is a particular part of the show that is very much adult humor and jokes and may cause you to have a certain conversation with your child if you decide to bring them.

Lastly there is a part of the show/song that is sung but also done in sign language. It was truly an amazing sight to behold.

If you love music, and you want to enjoy a fun take on the parables of Jesus inside of a pool then this is the show for you. It has humor, but also a more somber tone on the serious topics of the story of Jesus. I would recommend this show as a fun night of laughter and shock I don’t want to spoil the fun stuff!
